Since I started writing my own songs and performing them I've always yearned to perform them as part of a band. To flesh out the songs with an arrangement and to enjoy the shared inexplicable wonder of playing with other musicians.
Ben Budd is a friend from school - one of my oldest friends. He came to see me playing solo a couple of times and I learned he had started playing drums recently. I was the opening act for the band he was in with his brother Chris.
I met Jo Martyn at one of the legendary 'Pressure Valve' gigs at Bannerman's in Edinburgh. Although we were both performing as solo guitarist singer/songwriters we clicked over our love and history of all things bass.
I took a deep breath, steadied my nerves and asked these guys if they'd fancy working on some of my songs. To my utter delight they said they would love to and the Richard Buchanan Trio came into being. Straight away, the sound we made together was nice, natural, exciting.
I booked us a slot at a Pressure Valve session in Bannerman's for our inaugural gig and a friend of Ben's recorded some video clips which I strung together into the showreel video below.
I freakin' love playing with these guys.
